Soldiers and Sailors of the Confederacy Memorial Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania #NC-10314-MM - Notecards Also available in Assortment Pack #AST-853 Open Edition Prints will be available early 2003 Dedicated August 25, 1965 When commemorating the Civil War Centennial, historians decided that Gettysburg would be the appropriate site for a monument honoring all of the Confederate soldiers and sailors. Representing these forces is a Confederate color bearer, who waves on his comrades as he charges bravely into battle. Donald DeLue sculpted the bronze statue, which stands atop a pink granite base. The names of all the states with soldiers serving in the Confederate army are listed on the base; contributions for this memorial came from each of these states. Also found at the base is the name of Walter Washington Williams, who was recognized by the U.S. Congress as the last surviving Confederate Civil War veteran.
