More
New Yorkers died at Gettysburg than soldiers from any other state.
From a vantage point atop a 33-foot-high granite column, a bronze
statue of a woman weeps as she gazes over the New York plot in
the northern end of the National Cemetery. Her right arm extends
toward the graves, holding a wreath of flowers to honor the dead.
A Liberty Cap, symbolizing freedom, tops the staff in her left
hand. She is based on the figure on the left side of the New York
state seal.
Bronze
plaques on the base list every New York officer killed at Gettysburg.
Eleven individual badges for corps in which New York soldiers
served sit above the plaques. The top of the base features high-relief
bronze sculpture of four battle scenes involving Generals Hancock,
Reynolds, Sickles, and Slocum. Above these sculptures, a large
eagle stretches its wings. The firm of Marshall and Walter designed
this majestic monument.
