The
Marine Corps War Memorial stands on a hillock flanking Arlington
national Cemetery overlooking the nation's capital.
Sculpted
by Felix deWeldon, the statue shows five Marines and a Navy corpsman
raising the American flag over the Japanese-held island of IwoJima
onFebruary 23, 1945. It is based on a photograph, taken by James
Rosenthal, an Associated Press photographer, of the planting of
the American flag on Mount Suribachi.
The
statue has come to symbolize victory and the dauntlessness of
the American spirit.
