Mississippi State Memorial Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania #NC-10308-MM - Notecards Also available in Assortment Pack #AST-853 Open Edition Prints will be available early 2003 Dedicated October 19, 1973 This stirring monument depicts two infantrymen from General William Barksdale’s Mississippi Brigade. One of the soldiers stands over his fallen comrade, warding off attackers with the butt of his rifle. The mortally wounded soldier still holds the confederate flag. The monument stands on the site where Barksdale’s troops waited before going into battle on July 2. The scene typifies the close hand-to-hand combat encountered by the Mississippians that day. The bronze sculpture, attributed to Donald DeLue, was cast in Italy. Including its granite base, the monument stands 16 feet tall. It honors eleven infantry regiments, one infantry battalion, one cavalry regiment, and one artillery battery from Mississippi. Text © 2002 Terry White, Drawing © 2002 Bill Harrah
