Designed by
architect Henry Bacon, this beautiful Greek-style monument was
built to honor Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president (1861-65) of
the United States. The structure was completed in 1922 and dedicated
on Memorial Day of that year.
Thirty-six
Ionic columns, each standing forty-four feet tall, represent the
thirty-six states of the Union at the time of Abraham Lincoln's
death in 1865. Engraved on the inside right wall is Lincoln's
Second Inaugural Address, which he delivered just forty-one days
before his death. His eloquent Gettysburg Address is engraved
on the inside left wall. The beautiful mural of the Angel of Truth
was painted by Jules Guerin. The names of all forty-eight states
existing in 1922 are shown in festoons on the outside parapet
of the monument. Leading from the sidewalk up to the statue are
fifty-six steps, each one representing a year of Lincoln's life.
The 19-foot
high statue of the seated Abraham Lincoln was designed by Daniel
Chester French, America's most recognized sculptor of public monuments.
French used twenty-eight blocks of white marble during the four
years it took to carve the statue.
