Of the many
graves of famous people buried in Arlington National Cemetery,
none attract more tourists than that of John F. Kennedy, the 35th
U.S. President. A frequent visitor to Arlington National Cemetery,
Kennedy last walked the grounds on Veteran's Day in 1963, only
11 days before his assassination. On a previous visit to Arlington
House, the Robert E. Lee mansion at the heart of the property
taken for the cemetery, he had looked out across the Potomac River
to the Capital and commented, "I could stay here forever."
Jacqueline
Kennedy, the President's widow, selected his gravesite on a hill
below Arlington House and lit the eternal flame that burns brightly
in his honor. Upon her death in 1994, she was buried beside him.
The graves of their deceased children, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy
and an unnamed Infant Daughter, flank them.
Cape Cod field
stones frame the flame and the simple marble tombstones. Quotations
from Kennedy's Inaugural Address are inscribed along the ellipse.
Each year on May 29, John F. Kennedy's birthday, the President
sends a wreath to the gravesite. In a nearby grass plot lies the
casket of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the President's brother who
also was the victim of a political assassin.
