Memorial
Chapel
College
Park, Maryland
#NC-01260-ED - Notecards
#PR-01260-ED - Open Edition Print
The Memorial
Chapel, a non-denominational church built in 1952, is the center
of religious activity at the University of Maryland. Although
activities in the Chapel need not be religious in nature, they
must all pay respect to the integrity of a place of worship.
Commencement
ceremonies, weddings, convocations, memorial services and concerts
are held in three chapels within the building. The Main Chapel
accommodates 700 people; the West Chapel, 100 people. The Blessed
Sacrament Chapel, limited to 40 people, is reserved for Catholic
services.
The Memorial
Chapel carillon tolls hourly, rotating between "Hail! Alma
Mater" and "Maryland, My Maryland," the state song.
Refurbished through a gift of the Class of 1992, the carillon
chimes may be operated either manually or electronically.

Testudo
the Terrapin
College
Park, Maryland
#NC-01261-ED - Notecards
#PR-01261-ED - Open Edition Print
Created in 1933,
Testudo, the official mascot of the University of Maryland, was
produced at cost by Edwin C. Mayo, a former quarterback for the
university. During the unveiling, the canvas covering the sculpture
was tied to the live terrapin used as the model. As the smaller
terrapin struggled forward, Testudo was revealed for the first time.
Originally perched
in front of Ritchie Coliseum, Testudo was vandalized and kidnapped
by rival schools on several occasions. After being hidden in a carpentry
shed from 1947 to 1951, he was relocated to a new perch in front
of Byrd Stadium. In the 1960s, students uprooted the 1,000 pound
bronze mascot from his stadium pedestal and carefully carried him
to a central location in front of McKelden Library, where he continues
to preside over campus. His nose has become increasingly shiny over
the years, the result of students rubbing it for good luck.
