Large for
a wren, the Carolina wren is the size of a small sparrow. This
energetic bird thrives in gardens, parks, barnyards and forests
in the eastern United States except for the extreme north. Its
upper body is a warm reddish brown, changing to a buff belly.
It also has a conspicuous white eyebrow stripe.
Rarely seen
more than 12 feet above the ground, this ground forager likes
to check under fallen leaves and exposed tree roots for its diet
of insects, including ants, bees, beetles, caterpillars, crickets
and moths. This wren is rather clumsy in flight, springing up
and violently jerking its tail and body during short flappings
of wings that carry it only a few steps. Nests are built in enclosed
areas everything from abandoned woodpecker holes to old
cans and shoes. The Carolina Wren is the state bird of South Carolina
