Known as “Mad Anthony” because of his audacity and quick temper, this former tannery-owner was commissioned a Colonel in the Continental Army in 1776. After covering the American retreat from Canada, he was placed in charge of Fort Ticonderoga. In 1777, he became a Brigadier General. Shortly after joining General George Washington at Valley Forge that year, Wayne led a successful foraging expedition that captured cattle, horses and desperately needed supplies from the British.
Although Wayne was involved in many campaigns and was later selected by President Washington as Commander-in-Chief of the Army, he was best known for his brilliant seizure of Stony Point, New York, a British defense post, in 1779. His monument in Valley Forge National Historical Park is a replica of the one commissioned for Stony Point. The largest bronze statue in Valley Forge, it was designed by Henry K. Kush-Brown.
