Independence Hall
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Constructed between 1732 and 1756
#NC-17310-PA - Notecards
Also available in Assortment Pack #AST-1776

This fine example of Georgian-style architecture was built as the State House for the Province of Pennsylvania. From 1775 to 1783, the building served as the meeting place for the Second Continental Congress. Here General George Washington was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in 1775; the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776; the design of the American flag was agreed upon in 1777; the Articles of Confederation were adopted in 1781; the U.S. Constitution was drafted in 1787; and the U.S. Supreme Court presided from 1789 to 1800.

Inside and out, Independence Hall has been restored as much as possible to its original appearance. Now maintained as a museum at the heart of the Independence National Historical Park, the building contains the “rising sun” chair used by George Washington as he led the Constitutional Convention.
