of American Frontier Culture Staunton, Virginia Our Scotch-Irish
Heritage This farm once stood near the village of Drumquin, in
County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It reflects traditional architectural
designs from the 18th century.
The
two-room plan contained a kitchen and bedroom. The kitchen functioned
as the overall living area. The parents' bed was tucked into the
“outshot” near the fireplace. The adjacent room served
as an additional sleeping area and as a work area for weaving.
Attached
to the family's living area in the house is a small byre for cows,
which is entered from the exterior. The separate small structure
to the right front of the house is a piggery, or pig craw with
a hen house to its side, and a dovecote in the gable. To the left
of the house is a three-bay byre that has a turf store for the
fuel, cart shed, stable, and cow byre.
