Fort
Belvoir Chapel
Fort Belvoir, Virginia
#NC-08150-WP - Notecards
The all-denominational
Fort Belvoir Chapel sits on the Fairfax Plantation that George
Washington roamed as a boy and surveyed as an engineer. Fittingly,
the stained glass window in the chapel depicts Washington at prayer
at Valley Forge. The scene matches a description given by Isaac
Potts, a Quaker who stumbled upon Washington alone in the woods
during a wicked winter that left the Commander-in-Chief's troops
in tatters.
Another stained-glass
window, in memory of Major General Albert Carl Lieber, has a theme
of victory and reward with a Supreme Being. The scene includes
soldiers at attention as Abraham kneels to accept the blessing
of King Melchizedek, the priest of the most high God as related
in Genesis.
Designed by
Victor E. De Meers, the Colonial-style chapel was completed December
28, 1956 and dedicated January 25, 1957. It has become a very
popular site for weddings of all denominations.
