Maymont
House is the former home of Major James H. Dooley and his wife,
Sallie May. Designed by Edgerton Rogers and completed in 1893,
the 33-room Romanesque Revival mansion exhibits richly carved
furniture, oriental rugs, European porcelain, objet d'art and
restored interiors boasting stained glass and other sumptuous
detailing.
Three
exceptional objects in the Maymont House Collection include the
one-of-a-kind Tiffany and Company Dressing Table and Chair made
of sterling silver and narwhal tusks; the monumental 12'9"
rosewood Exposition Cabinet displayed at the Paris Universal Exposition
in 1855; and the Swan Bed, a singular creation formed in the shape
of a large swan made around 1910 to suit the whim of Mrs. Dooley.
Now
maintained and operated by a private nonprofit foundation, Maymont's
complex also features Italian and Japanese Gardens, an Arboretum,
Nature Center, Native Virginia Wildlife Exhibits, Children's Farm
and Carriage Collection.
