Dooley acquired a former dairy farm on the James River and created a Gilded Age showplace. Today, Maymont is appreciated as a significant example of an American country place, a distinctive estate on the grand scale for which luxurious landscaping was an essential part. The Italian Garden was designed by Noland and Baskervill and completed by 1910. The garden incorporates traditional elements of the style, including balustraded terraces, geometrically shaped beds or parterres, clipped evergreens, fountains and a pergola. A Cascade Fountain descends from the promenade to the lower level of the garden. Other gardens at Maymont include the Japanese Garden and Herb Garden. Maymont is also a nationally respected Arboretum with hundreds of native and exotic trees. Now maintained and operated by a private nonprofit foundation, Maymont's complex also features a Nature Center, Native Virginia Wildlife Exhibits, Children's Farm and Carriage Collection.
